Generation: Black Air was started, honestly, when I decided I wanted to write both a straight and a gay Kurt.
Okay, that was only part of how it was started. But it was an important part!
Generation: Black Air picks up roughly 13-15 years after Growing Up A Superhero picks up, before AOA, Onslaught, and Claremont.
It's based on the idea that Black Air, that Evil Government Agency, decided to create their own superheroes from the genetic material of their best former agents. Some of those former agents (Domino, Pete Wisdom and Wolverine) find out. They decide that This Is Not Cool, and go to rescue the little DNA copes.
In addition, at some point, in a GUAS story I never wrote (oops), Amanda Sefton, Nightcrawler and Shadowcat were abducted and then rescued by Pete Wisdom and the rest of Excalibur. So, Black Air has their DNA as well.
Now, all of the above people plus Cable go and rescue the kids.
Post rescue, they realize that just getting the kids out of there isn't going to work; these "kids" are trained assassins, have a terrible history, and, in some cases, aren't exactly right in the head. The rest of the series is about trying to make them right in the head.
Notes
I started this to be a single story; Generation: Black Air. It was a huge success. Looking back at it now, all I can think is . . . wow. There must have been a lot of sucky writers for that to be popular!
The series was discontinued at part 8. I'd lost over 100 pages when my computer crashed, and, in part, didn't have the heart to re-write it all. In addition, I decided I'd rather turn it into a novel. Obivously, things were changed for that; characters altered or cut, new characters added, some of the plotlines changed.
Gen:BA had an odd following, though I appreciated the fans greatly. They were the only reason parts 7 and 8 got re-written at all! They're also the reason for the novel.
The story was really about Azul, Pistol, and Trace. For all intents and purposes, Azul was the hero. He was certainly my favorite! Pistol and I had a love/hate relationship: I just loved to hate him. I still do. I find him fasinating, but I hate his guts. He's despicable. He's also sociopathic. Trace keeps him sane.
Vault was a character I never really got a handle on myself, in large part because I don't think he ever got a handle on himself. Bombarded by others' thoughts and emotions, I don't really think he ever knew what he though, or what his own emotions on something were. He sure was fun, though!
I suppose that's really all I can say about these characters. Sometime soon, I'll be posting about the novel. Heh.
