Shadowy Domain ch 7
Behind her she felt Kit tense, the air snap with the silence of a predator. Jessie took a deep breath and put a hand on his arm, feeling him jump.
Risk grit her teeth. "You shoot at any of us and I'll kill your precious cats." The gun was still aimed at Dana's head, and Dana swallowed spasmodically.
"Risk, don't!" Jessie hissed. The look in the time torn woman's eyes told her quite plainly that she would if that's what was needed.
"Go ahead, Risk. Shoot 'em. We were going to kill them soon anyway."
Jessie felt Kit shudder. Or was that her? Jonny stepped closer, blocking her body with his. Someone chuckled.
"I think you should let us go." January smiled, and dropped a man to the floor, his gun in pieces and claw marks on his neck. Blood dripped from her hands.
"I agree." February's eyes narrowed as three more men fell into a sudden hole in the floor.
Gunshot erupted, shooting mostly at January and February, leaving Risk to shoot her heart out. Whirling on the men she fired randomly, motioning Hadji to get behind her as someone shot at him.
"Jess, this way." Colin whispered. They turned to a black spot in the wall, and found that there was a small hole in the deep shadow. All three catpeople went through, Jessie following. She kicked out at Jonny, attracting his attention, and he followed quickly. Hadji came after that, limping heavily on his bleeding leg.
The cats reached a cave and stopped, then turned. "You're bleeding." Dana said, walking quietly to the Indian.
"Ah, yes. Stray bullets." Hadji watched warily as the slender woman walked quietly forward, then knelt at his shin. Suddenly another one was there, glaring at him out of glowing yellow eyes.
"Sit down. You're Jessie's friend?" Dana asked hesitantly.
Hadji could only nod, his voice taken by the muscled figure glowering at him. He practically fell to the floor, the relief of being off the bleeding leg showing clearly in his face.
Poseidon came through the wall, followed closely by January. "Hadji--what happened?" January said dropping to her knees beside him.
Colin snarled and lashed out at her, shoving her away from his little sister.
January rolled with the blow, then stood up, her eyes blazing. Her keen senses smelled the fear in the air, emanating mostly from the three cats. She stopped, looking closely at the boy. His whiskers trembled, responding to the shaking of his body. Yellow eyes showed intense terror, and protectiveness for his family. January took a deep breath and stepped back, raising her hands in a surrender gesture.
"Colin, it's okay. She's a friend too." Jessie tried to assure him. She put her hand on his arm and felt him flinch back, then slowly relax. Sweat made the fur on his chest and face even darker, giving the blazing eyes a demonic quality.
Kit shuddered as more humans stepped through the wall, emitting a low growl when he saw the woman with the gun. He crouched back into the shadows, trying to be invisible. He hated humans. All they ever did was hurt them.
"Hadji, are you all right?" Risk asked sharply as she saw Dana wrapping his leg with pieces of his bodysuit.
"I am fine," he assured her.
"Good. You--cats. you know this pace better than any of us. How do we get out?"
Colin snarled. "Why should we show you?"
Risk glared at him. "Because, if you don't you have to stay here too. And you heard what they said, they're gonna kill you sooner or later."
Colin hesitated. He didn't want to leave, face people screaming, the unknown, but again, he didn't want to die. And he had a responsibility to his siblings. "We'll show you. But no more of that gun pointing stuff."
"If you lead us into a trap you won't have to worry. I won't bother pointing the gun." Risk threatened.
Colin's eyes narrowed and he heard Kit growl again. Dana stood and he started to lead them off, grabbing Jessie and tossing her up into another hole, higher up this time. She crawled through, trusting her friends, and heard a shout as Jonny was tossed up behind her.
Finally they had everyone in and the cats followed, shouting directions to Jess, who was in the lead. behind them they heard the men come into the cave, shooting into shadows. Colin took a deep breath and kept going.

Poseidon shivered and kept walking. Her gills felt dry and her skin was flaking. She needed to get to water fast. The cats were leading them out, and so far they'd done a good job. They'd run into one patrol group, but it had been easily dispatched. Below them she could hear men walking around, talking, looking for them. She hated heights. Especially when it was little catwalks like this.
"We're almost out." February whispered, and Poseidon turned to pass it along. The smell of fresh air greeted her nose, the salty sea fragrance wonderful. She took a deep breath and smiled, then stepped out into the light. They were surrounded by men and guns.
"Put your hands up on your head." Someone said through a loudspeaker. Poseidon's eyes narrowed. How dare they stop her this close to water! She could control it all, and they were on an island! She raised her arms, calling the waves to crash down even as the men opened fire on her. A tidal wave swept them off, flowing around her group so as not to touch them. The bullets were sucked up in the liquid and the girl grinned triumphantly. There was a reason they'd named her Poseidon.
"Good job, now come on!" Risk shouted above the still settling liquid. The jet lowered, letting them step from the island to the plank, and it raced up until nothing could reach them and the island was just a distant dot on the blue sea.
"January, February, if you'd do the honors?" Risk smiled at the girl as the jet started to lower again, until they could open the hatch without dying. January hung over the edge, looking down at the despicable spot of land.
"Feb?"
February glowed bright yellow, then the light suddenly transferred from one girl to the other, and January shot it out, obliterating the farce. It went up in a giant explosion, rocking the small plane. January turned and smiled. "That was so much fun."
