Shadowy Domain ch 4

Race's mind felt drugged, thick. He opened his eyes slowly, trying hard to wake up. That woman came to him again, a needle in her hand. He felt her reach up--his arms were above his head?--and a sudden prick before falling into darkness.

Jessie looked out the window of the jet. They were taking her to the spot where she'd seen her father, the strike team asembled. She looked up and around at the group of people. January, dressed in a solid black body suit with a black mask covering the upper half of her face and a black belt with . . . things . . . in it, flew the plane with an ease that was admriable. Risk sat beside her, dressed in a yellow body suit, no mask. Her blue eyes were intense with concentration as she gave quiet orders to the younger woman. Just behind that chair Dr. Quest sat, black body suit in the place of his normal clothes. They had given everyone the suits, telling them that they couldn't go unles they wore them. They were made of unstable molecules that would shift to keep the outfits from tearing.

Beside her sat Jonny, very handsome in the deep blue of his uniform as his blue eyes stared out the window at some distant spot in space.

Hadji sat across from them, between February, who wore bright red, and a girl called Poseidon who had odd eyes, and blue hair. Her suit was almost non-exsistant, a bikini type thing that let her use her power better, or so Risk said. She was very pretty, though slightly younger than Jessie, and the redhead found herself sneaking glances at Jonny, to see if he was looking at the girl. To Jessie's relief, he wasn't.

She felt the jet suddenly slow, and Risk walked back.

"Ready, 'Sidon?"

The girl with the water reflecting on her skin, though there was no water around, nodded and stood up.

"Just find a spot where we can get in."

The teen nodded again and walked to the door.

"Everyone strapped in?"

Jonny looked up, then reached across and re-buckled his seatbelt. Benton gave him a warning look. Jonny just shrugged and smiled lopsidedly.

The hatch opened and Poseidon jumped out, much to Jessie's shock. "What--"

"It's okay, she's fine. Don't worry."

Jessie watched as the figure plumeted to the water, making a splash she could see from there. The liquid was clear, and she could see the blue haired meta-human start swiming toward the man made island.

"She's not coming up." Hadji said in distress.

"She has gills." Risk told him, smiling.

"Oh. Of course. Gills." Hadji murrmured.

Jonny laughed quietly.

The young woman reached the island and disappeard underneath, swimming far deeper than anyone else could go.

The silence in the cabin became oppresive again, and Jessie tried to "look" for her father. She could see him, unmoved from the first time, and wondered how they were going to pull this off. Her starter, or so they called it, itched on her face and she reached up to sratch it.

Jonny watched Jessie out of the corner of his eye. Too weird. He'd read about super powers in comic books and stuff, had seen January in action, but the thought that JESSIE might have them . . . it was just too weird. She shifted her position on the bench-like seat, biting her lip. She was beutiful in the deep green they'd put her in. He wondered if it had been on purpose that they'd used that color, it brought out her eyes wonderfully.

Something pinged and Risk reached for a mike.

"What is it, 'Seidon?"

"I found a door, under the water. But too deep, perhaps four hundred feet." Came her voice over the intercom.

"All right . . . um . . . January, will your healing factor keep you alive that far down?"

January ran a hand through her long hair, thinking. "It should. I can try, and if it's too much than I'll come up."

"Great. Put some moniters on, and I'll make sure you're safe from up here." Risk started digging through boxes and things, and finally pulled out a few dots. She stuck them carefully on Shadow, then opened the hatch and watched as the girl jumped out. "'Kay guys, watch this. Four hundred feet is too far for most things mammal to live, but J's healing factor should work and keep her okay."

The Quest's and Jessie gathered around a small holographic projector, watching raptly as an image of what January was doing came up.

"How come it's too far? No air?" Jonny heard himself asking.

"No air. Even swimming fast, with Poseidon, it's too long. The only reason Poseidon can do it is because the oxygen goes into a muscle kind of thing, and her ribcage colapses, letting her drop instead of swim. Dolphins do the same thing."*

The image swirled, showing the vital signs that were being crushed under the weight of water. As each thing was crushed, or she ran out of air, or something else like that, her healing factor kicked higher and fixed it. Soon they could tell that even that was being taxed though. She stopped moving through the water suddenly, and February smiled, her eyes shut.

"She's reached the door. Gaining entrance. She's in. Shutting the door. Locking. Poseidon's with her. They're inside, shaowporting somewhere safe so the checkup team can't find them. She says she'll find another door to let us in." Her eyes opened and her smile widened. "She's okay."

"How did you know all that?" Dr. Quest heard himself asking.

"We share a telepathic link. I can heard her thoughts, she can hear mine. We can feel each other's actions and things." She explained.

"You should see 'em at the dinner table. They sit and all of a sudden start giggleing for no reason you can see, and one of them will say, "she cracked a joke." It's really irritating." Risk smiled and looked at February who was rolling her eyes.

"Like you're not irritating with that "someone get the phone" before it ever rings." Fedruary retaliated.

Risk just smiled. "That's different."

"Oh! January wants to know if we're coming or not. She's down there." February looked out the window, then waved.

"Yeah, we're going now. Am I staying with the plane or are you?" Risk asked.

"Dr. Quest is."

"What? Now wait just a minute--"

"Bye!" Before he could start protesting too much Risk had punched in January's tracking cowordantants and they had all disapeared.

Benton looked around the empty cabin in shock. Teleportation. Telepathic links. Future seeing. A woman with gills. Amazing. His kids somewhere where he couldn't help. A shudder ran through his body and he sat down at the moniter, tracking where they went. No wonder Risk had ben showing him how to work this plane. They'd been planning on leaving him here. His cheeks went hot with anger as that was another reason not to like Risk. And he still couldn't stay mad. (Which, in itself, was another reason to hate her.)
