Lost in Shadows ch 7

North leaned back in his seat, steepling his fingers against his lips. He watched the screen with delight, waiting.

"Hurry it up, slowpoke!" Jonny hissed to February as she tried to get the ropes off Race. She glared at him and Jonny turned back to his dad, chuckling.

"Hey guys, looks like this way is blocked off," Risk said, closing and locking the cell door as five guards came running down the hall, guns ready.

"Then we'll have to go out the other door," Race said as he stood up, pulling the rest of the bonds away from his limbs as February went on to her sister.

Benton looked around the room while Jonny untied his hands, then looked back at Race. "I hate to tell you this friend, but there is no other door."

Risk grinned. "Now that depends on how you've been trained, how big you are, and where you look." She walked quickly to Race, coming up to his chest. "Think you can get me up there?"

He looked down at her, his eyes twinkling. Stooping, he cupped his hands and waited for her to step up.

In the corner Jonny helped Hadji up while January watched Risk vault from Race's hands to sit on his shoulders.

Jessie, newly untied, rubbed her sore wrists and looked around to make sure that everyone was free. Someone outside the cell started yelling and shooting at the door in an effort to break it down. Jessie found herself greatly relived that the door had been sealed against escape.

Risk grunted as she tried to pull at the grate, but it was no use. The screws were tight. She placed her hands on Race's head and leaned back, looking around from her vantage point. Race took a balancing step and grabbed her legs, mumbling about ladies gaining weight.

Risk ignored him, mostly. "Does anyone have a pocket knife?" she asked while attempting to pull a lock of Race's hair out.

Jonny smothered laughter and handed his over, then watched as she reached up as far as she could and started to unscrew the iron.

"Got it!" she said triumphantly as the thing clattered to the floor.

"It might be wise to hurry," Hadji said as he watched the door start to buckle.

Race eyed it, then shook his head. "They're letting us escape. We've got at least five minutes." Turning back to the wall he looked up at Risk. "Can you get through there?"

"If I were higher." She frowned, then shrugged. "Here goes. Hold on, old man, this should be over soon and I don't want to fall." Carefully she shifted her weight, then crouched on one broad shoulder, balancing until her other leg was underneath her and she could stand upright. Race held her legs and stood as still as he could.

Suddenly her weight was no longer there, and he looked up in time to see her be swallowed into the darkness. "Next!" he said, reaching out for Jessie. She screeched as he tossed her up, not bothering to let her brace her feet on his shoulders. Next went Jonny, then the twins and Hadji. When only he and Benton were left, Race eyed the small opening. "We ain't gonna fit through there."

"I'd already noticed," Benton said dryly.

"Risk! You've gotta get rid of the men by the door!" Race shouted, cupping his hands around his mouth. There was silence for a few minutes, then a scuffle outside. A guard opened the door slowly and Race took a defensive stand. Benton put a hand on his shoulder. "Jonny had the keys."

Jessie appeared a minute later, grinning. "Pretty good, Dr. Quest!" She turned serious as she motioned the guard into the cell with the gun she held, then waited with it pointed until Risk came in and started tying the man up.

Race moved slowly to his daughter's side and took the weapon. "I think I prefer you without the heavy artillery," he said quietly. Jessie made a rude noise.

Risk started laughing. "You know, she's a really good fighter. I was impressed. I assume you didn't teach her?" she said, blue eyes twinkling mischievously.

"Very funny, Daisy."

Risk sobered.

"Can we leave now?" Jonny asked, poking his head around the door while keeping watch down the hall. Benton noticed that his son also had some sort of large firearm. He imitated Race's move. Jonny grinned.

"Let's get out of here!" Risk agreed, starting down the hall. They traveled for half an hour, beat up ten more men and sustained non-serious injuries before Jonny and February admitted they were lost.

"There's a very good reason for that," North said over the intercom. "I have no intention of you leaving alive. And, I thought that since you were going to die anyway, you wouldn't mind my new killers practicing on you. I do believe you've met," there was a creaking in the rafters above, and Risk turned, gun drawn though she was unable to see in the darkness. "Cheetah, Cougar and Tiger. Meet the Quests."
